Finasteride (Generic ProscarĀ®) is in a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. It works by blocking the body’s production of a male hormone that causes the prostate to enlarge. FDA approved this for BPH 1994. Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions. This is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH, enlargement of the prostate gland). This improves symptoms of BPH such as frequent and difficult urination and may reduce the chance of acute urinary retention (suddenly being unable to pass urine). This is also used to reduce hair loss due to male pattern baldness. This is only for use in men. Women or children must not take the tablets. Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning. Like any medicine, this may have unintended or unwanted effects. These are uncommon and do not affect most men. Some men may notice changes in their sex lives. Some men may have a decrease in the amount of semen released during sex. This does not appear to interfere with normal sexual function. In some men, such side effects disappear with time, even if treatment is continued.In rare cases, some men have reported breast swelling and/ or tenderness, or allergic reactions, such as lip swelling and rash. If you experience these or any other unusual symptoms, go and see your doctor promptly.Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets. This is known to cause birth defects in a developing male baby. Dosage and Administration. BPH: 5mg dailyMale-Pattern Baldness: 1mg dailyThis can be taken with or without food with a full glass of water. Take this at around the same time every day. Important. It is important to take this regularly to get the most benefit. Continue even if you feel well and do not stop taking without talking to your doctor. This works best when taken long term.
