Fenofibrate (Generic Tricor®) is a lipid-lowering agent (fibrate). It works by increasing the enzyme that breaks down fats in the blood. Usage, Directions, Indication and Instructions. This is used in conjunction with a special diet, to treat people with very high levels of triglycerides (a fatty substance in the blood). It lowers total cholesterol–including “bad” LDL cholesterol–and raising “good” HDL cholesterol. It works by promoting the dissolution and elimination of fat particles in the blood. To be sure this medication is helping your condition, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Your liver and gallbladder function may also need to be tested. Adverse Reactions, Precautions and Warning. Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to it or any other medications. Do not forget to tell your doctor and pharmacist your medical history, what other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. You should avoid drinking alcohol while taking the medication, alcohol can raise triglyceride levels, and may also damage your liver. This has been associated with a rare but serious side effect of the muscles. Other people may or may not experience abnormal muscle tenderness, pain, or weakness, upset stomach, constipation, headache, dizziness or trouble sleeping flu-like symptoms, fever, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Notify your doctor immediately if effects persist and worsen. Dosage and Administration. This is usually taken with or without food once a day. Take it at around the same time(s) every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. Important. Full effects may take up to 3 months to occur. It is important to take regularly to get the most benefit. Continue taking even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this without talking to your doctor.
