Lovastatin (Generic MevacorĀ®) is in a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. The most common side effects are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and abnormal liver tests. Notify your doctor immediately if effects persist and worsen. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Dosage and Administration. Depending which strength you want to take, this usually is taken once or twice a day with meals. Important. Continue taking even if you feel well. Do not stop without first talking to your doctor. It may take several weeks of taking the medication before your condition improves.
